ABSTRACT

The Paralympic Games is the world’s second largest multi-sport games in the world but it is still in a relative infancy when compared to the Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games has only existed officially since 1960 and since its inception it has been linked to able-bodied sport and the Olympics in particular. Almost sixty years later questions are now being asked as to whether the Paralympics are outdated and unnecessary, with athletes with disabilities being discriminated against by an able-bodied majority or does a separate Games, movement and nomenclature still resonate as a necessary form of differentiation.
