ABSTRACT
Class consciousness is not a simple concept—or so at least I find; and it may therefore be useful to examine one particular instance of it, and of its application in a specific historical context. The case is that of Barnave, who played a leading role in the early phases of the French Revolution, and who in any case deserves, if only for his Introduction à la Révolution Française, to be better known than he is. 1
