ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the three stages in couples counselling for sex addiction: discovery, disclosure and rebuilding trust. The author recommends individual counselling work for both parties in preparation for disclosure, wherein the addict reveals the specifics of their compulsive acting-out behaviours and answers thepartner’s questions. Individual cognitive behavioural and mindfulness work is integral after disclosure to help both sides cope with the emotional impact. The object of this process is to continue to bring both parties together, so that trust can be rebuilt and true intimacy can be introduced to the relationship.
