ABSTRACT

In the light of existing debates on the aetiology of sexually addictive behaviour profiles, clinical frameworks that lend themselves to integrative application are needed. The authors of this chapter present the mentalization-based treatment model for sex addiction (MBT-SA) as a clinical framework that can be applied across therapy formats and in conjunction with other theoretical models. The chapter describes the general precepts of the MBT-SA model, giving attention to the associate underlying theory of psychological change for sex addicts in treatment. Specific clinical considerations of applying MBT-SA within accepted therapy formats are then described. Finally, strategies for MBT-SA’s therapeutic integration, including integration with other theoretical models, are discussed.
