ABSTRACT

Although sexual addiction is relatively common, controlled trials on pharmacological treatments are still lacking. The available literature on this topic consists essentially of open-label trials and case-report series. Pharmacological interventions should be part of a more comprehensive treatment plan, including psychotherapy and, in most cases, behavioural therapy. It is recommended that comorbid psychiatric disorders, as well as the potential medical consequences of sexual addiction, should be evaluated and treated. Many anecdotal studies have shown that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors could be promising in the treatment of sexually compulsive behaviours. Pharmacological treatments used for substance addictions may also be interesting in treating sexual addiction.
