ABSTRACT

The authors of this chapter define ‘out of control sexual behaviour’ as a sexual health problem in which consensual sexual urges, thoughts or behaviours feel out of control. This clinical presentation is framed as a behaviour problem within the normal range of sexual expression. The authors adapt a dual-process model for human behaviour to conceptualise how competing motivations disrupt the addict’s felt sense of control. The chapter offers a sexual health alternative to the disorder-based treatment models of sex addiction, impulsive/compulsive sexual behaviour and hypersexual behaviour.
