ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the Challenge Leading to Engagement, Achievement, and Results (CLEAR) Curriculum Model and a description of the features embedded in the model. A core tenet of differentiation and the CLEAR model is that quality differentiation is only possible if curriculum is based on big ideas and the essential questions of the discipline(s) in a unit of study. Depth and complexity serve as the primary guide to selection of content, differentiation to considerations of content, process and learning environment, and the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) to process and product elements of the model. CLEAR Curriculum unit activities are informed by and adjusted according to ongoing, formative assessment of students. The CLEAR Curriculum Model identifies five foundational elements, namely continual formative assessments, clear learning goals, data-driven learning experiences, authentic products, and rich curriculum that encourage engagement and promote achievement for diverse gifted learners.
