ABSTRACT
Human fire use has transformed environments across the globe. Fire presents people with innumerable opportunities, but can also threaten human life, health and property, as well as non-human species and communities. This chapter considers three dimensions of fire: fire in nature; fire as opportunity; and fire as hazard. It highlights the complexity of managing fire in human landscapes, particularly when there are conflicts between economic, environmental and hazard reduction objectives.
