ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that there is power in speculative fiction, and especially in an emerging genre of fiction coming to be known as “climate fiction” or “cli-fi.” Adamson explains why writers, critics, and scientists are arguing that fiction and imagination are vitally important for identifying, making sense of, and solving the problems associated with climate change. She extrapolates on the deep literary history of this genre that is seeking to break through the inertia of inaction and fire the imagination of readers to create, engineer, and build ecologically agile, adaptable, and plausible futures rather than dystopian ones.
