ABSTRACT

Environmental education is not simply the passing on of objective information about the natural world. It is a deeply social process in which values are articulated, contested, and influenced. This chapter explores the evolution of environmental education, from its early roots in nature study to the modern exploration of complex social-ecological systems, critical inquiry into humanity’s relationship to nature, and the causes of global environmental problems. This chapter touches upon emerging pedagogies including crowd-sourced learning, gamification, and geo-visualization, focusing on how these new tools might more effectively connect education to behaviour change.
