ABSTRACT

Given the prevalence of metaphors in environmental thought, this chapter reviews their significance and implications for practice, drawing upon diverse examples (including ecological restoration, ecosystem services, invasive species and planetary boundaries). It encourages critical reflection about any metaphor we encounter in terms of four questions: i) Is the metaphor apt?; ii) What is highlighted and what is hidden by this metaphor?; iii) What values does this metaphor communicate?; and iv) What does this metaphor do? It can be difficult to notice everyday metaphors, yet they deeply influence our thought and actions, so we may approach environmental issues in a more informed way by critically engaging with them.
