ABSTRACT

In 1865, William Stanley Jevons first postulated in his book, The Coal Question, that energy efficiency leads to an equal or greater amount of energy consumption rather than a reduction. Over one hundred years later, Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (1975) furthered this hypothesis and then Khazzoom-Brookes expanded the research. The next derivation in the research was the rebound effect which is the quantification of the energy consumption increase as a result of an energy efficiency improvement. The macro-level causes of the Jevons Paradox were not considered until years later with the population, affluence, and efficiency measures. This chapter provides an overview of the Jevons Paradox and the research advances that have been made on the topic.
