ABSTRACT

On 1 January 2016 ‘Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (the 2030 Agenda)’ came into effect. This United Nations document sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 associated targets, to be achieved by 2030. The objective is to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. The SDGs follow on from, and expand upon, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but the SDGs are much broader in scope and apply to all countries. Because all the SDGs depend upon each other, these dependencies need to be taken into account when implementing the SDGs.
