ABSTRACT
Environmental conservation and restoration are established, diverse and contested fields. This chapter provides an overview, focusing on key debates. It addresses four central questions: What, where and when to conserve? Who knows best? What works? And who and what benefits? These questions are subject to lively discussion, indicating a rich politics and mature intellectual capacity in this area of environmental studies.
