ABSTRACT
How do economic activities depend on environmental goods and services? How should the environmental impact of these activities be regulated? These questions underpin a long-standing debate about the optimal relationship between economy and the natural environment. This chapter reviews answers to these questions by focusing on the goal of economic activities, different views of nature and views about the role of technology in society.
