ABSTRACT

In recent years, multi-level environmental governance has become a standard term in environmental studies to denote the proliferation of governing modalities such as networks, markets and communities for shaping societal action on the environment. This chapter describes the emergence of multi-level environmental governance and examines the various means through which it is enacted, including new policy instruments and institutional innovations, across political levels. The chapter therefore contributes to our understanding of how the environment is governed in contemporary societies.
