ABSTRACT

Proponents of sustainability seek to change themselves and others, so environmental studies might well concern itself with the development and changeability of behavior. On this issue, the question how much is nature, how much is nurture is common in popular debate and announcements about developments in science—even though scientists and other commentators repeatedly assert that nature versus nurture is an ill-framed formulation. This entry provides a basis for critical interpretation of the nature–nurture opposition as an instance of nature versus culture, and for moving beyond that informed by political-economic studies that analyze socio-environmental situations as outcomes of intersecting processes.
