ABSTRACT
This chapter explores diverse forms of public engagement with the environmental sciences from their inception as disciplines to the present day. It argues that publics have always played an important role in supporting and validating the environmental sciences, and have also significantly influenced the practices of environmental science through their labours as ‘citizen scientists’ and as activists challenging scientific findings.
