ABSTRACT

Debates on environmental governance see some argue that contemporary governance practices reconfigure the relationship between the state, civil society and markets. Others caution against overstating the changes, arguing that the state is not governing less, but is governing differently. Discussion raises important questions about democracy and environmental citizenship. Environmental governance confronts an age-old challenge – how to ensure voice for the marginalised and how to govern in nature’s interest when nature cannot ‘speak’. It also confronts a new challenge: how to steer society in ways that protect the natural environment upon which all our future depends.
