ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a general overview of bioregionalism, a social movement which aims to recover a sense of place by revitalizing ecologically sustainable and culturally diverse societies in the context of their local geographical areas, or ‘bioregions’. The chapter covers how bioregions are variously defined; how bioregionalists endeavor to reinhabit local areas in ways that are ecologically sustainable, socially just, and humanly satisfying; how bioregionalism’s advocacy of the devolution of economic, political, and social power to local communities differs from the current ‘industrio-scientific paradigm’; and how bioregionalism seeks to reconcile preserving local cultural diversity with a commitment to global solidarity.
