ABSTRACT

Symbolic politics is a pejorative term commonly referring to forms of action which are perceived as half-hearted and ineffective. But symbolism is an essential component of all politics; and all actors are making use of it. This chapter explores the significance of symbols in environmental politics. It portrays them as indispensable in an increasingly complex world, but then also discusses the widespread critique of merely symbolic politics. Most importantly, however, this chapter contrasts the notions of symbolic and simulative politics, which is, arguably, a crucially important tool for making sense of the apparent contradictions of contemporary eco-politics.
