ABSTRACT

Ecotheology is an emerging field within religious studies. It is the result of the efforts of scholars to explore religious traditions with a view to identifying, examining and further developing teachings and practices relevant to the ecological crises. While the term, ecotheology, was first applied to Christianity, it is now more generally applied to a variety of religious traditions. This chapter contains a brief, accessible overview of how ecotheology began and evolved amid the environmental concerns of the twentieth century. It also gives a sampling of the major scholars and various perspectives of ecotheology.
