ABSTRACT

We live in a throwaway society. But what can designers do about it—surely they’re part of the problem? This chapter flips conventional thinking on its head, to explain why users discard products that still work, and how designers can create products users keep for longer. Through this, strategies for longer-lasting materials, products and user experiences are developed—an approach called, ‘emotionally durable design’. This text argues for an economy of better, not more, where designers lead sustainable change through materials, products and experiences designed to last.
