ABSTRACT

Environmental Psychology is the research, teaching and practice conducted by psychologists on both the built and natural environment. This chapter presents an overview of this academic sub-discipline since its origins in the 1960s. It is distinguished by two fundamental attributes: a focus upon the individual as the unit of analysis and an emphasis upon a scientific approach to research. The discipline is a thriving area that investigates many important environmental challenges. Research is founded upon the adoption of rigorous, theory-driven empirical research methods and aims to inform policies and improve human wellbeing.
