ABSTRACT

Environmental political theory (EPT) – sometimes called green political theory – is an interdisciplinary field that contributes to our understanding of environmental challenges, and strategies designed to address these challenges, in several interconnected ways. First, EPT is rooted in the tradition of political theorizing, which closely and critically examines concepts including democracy, justice, freedom, and representation. EPT extends its critique to concepts including sustainability, environment, and nature. Second, EPT is committed to the critical analysis of structures of power. Third, EPT moves beyond critique to advance normative arguments for alternative arrangements of social and political ideas and institutions.
