ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief summary of the central tenets of resilience science, defining resilience broadly as the ability of a system to adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining its core characteristics. Resilience science is grounded in a social-ecological systems perspective and complex-systems thinking. Key concepts introduced in this chapter include the adaptive cycle and Panarchy, regime shifts and the relationship between adaptation and transformation. After a brief review of principles for the practical application of resilience thinking, the chapter touches on resilience perspectives across multiple disciplines and outside of the academy.
