ABSTRACT

In most business settings data visualization can be used to communicate a story that incentivizes desired behavior. Techniques from behavioral operations, behavioral economics and human perception analysis can be put to use with data visualizations to tell that story. The following hypothetical scenario is based upon the author’s real-world experiences in a variety of business settings. In this scenario a small sales organization has been using a new software tool to grow sales revenues, improve sales contract profitability and to improve customer service outcomes. In this story we will see both good and bad examples of data visualization, behaviors that are driven by the visualizations used, and data visualization enhancements that improved the perceptions and behaviors of those consuming the information.
