ABSTRACT

Stimulating Community Initiatives in Sustainable Land Management (SCI-SLM) aims to identify, improve and upscale local innovation in sustainable land management by communities in the dry lands of Africa. The countries that participated in the SCI-SLM project were chosen to represent the different geographical regions of Africa, with a range of socio-economic and ecological conditions. A look at the institutional setting shows the laws and policies that supported and influenced the implementation of the SCI-SLM project across the participating countries. Many Ghanaians continue to depend on natural resources, which leads to significant pressure on the environment. In 1991, Ghana formulated a National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) and started implementing it in 1993 under a project called the Ghana Environmental Resource Management Project (GERMP). Under the GERMP, several sub-projects dealt with land degradation and natural resource management.
