ABSTRACT

In Uganda, land degradation is a widespread problem exacerbated by population pressure and the use of unsustainable farming practices in already vulnerable soils. The south-western part of the Cattle Corridor is characterised by undulating steep hills which experience serious land degradation due to overgrazing, frequent bush burning and inappropriate farming practices. The Nalukonge Community Initiative Association (NACIA) is a pastoral community whose land in the dry land Cattle Corridor ecosystem used to be severely affected by land degradation. NACIA was selected as a Stimulating Community Initiatives in Sustainable Land Management (SCI-SLM) community for its distinctive use of indigenous knowledge and local innovation in SLM to address land degradation. The Rwoho Environment Conservation and Protection Association (RECPA) initiative is a social innovation based on the mobilisation and organisation of community members to promote land use changes that reduce environmental hazards, ensure land restoration and increase ecosystem services.
