ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the process of cross-learning that played a central role in Stimulating Community Initiatives in Sustainable Land Management. The University for Development Studies in Ghana has a mandate to integrate indigenous knowledge with scientific knowledge at community levels, and its students are required to live in rural communities as part of the curriculum, in order to understand indigenous knowledge and community life. The initial intra-country exchange visits offered opportunities to bring the communities together, present the selected initiatives and the SCI-SLM project with its methodology to community members, and to build common understanding of its goals. Targa-Aide in Morocco was particularly interested in the regional approach of SCI-SLM and the aspect of South-to-South learning. During the regional exchange visit to Uganda, community representatives from South Africa realised the need to take their own initiatives to higher levels. SCI-SLM's regional approach, with community initiatives practised in the four corners of Africa, offered a unique opportunity for cross-learning experiences.
