ABSTRACT
Not long before his death, Urie Bronfenbrenner (2005), one of the architects of Head Start, observed, “To a greater extent than for any other species, human beings create the environments that shape the course of human development” (p. xxviii). In other words, who our children become individually and collectively and the societies they build are shaped by their daily lives in school today. Schooling cannot simply be an institution for passing on the culturally accumulated academic tools. We must have a bigger vision than that.
