ABSTRACT

Like other sustainability educators, the author presents scientific and technical information about climate disruption, resource depletion, toxic pollution, biodiversity loss, and other symptoms of the global ecological crisis in her classes. In this chapter, she discusses five pedagogical strategies that she have found useful, as well as some tried-and-true examples of assignments and classroom activities for each strategy. All of the teaching practices described in this chapter are taken from courses she has taught at Antioch University Seattle's Graduate Programs in Leadership and Change; however, they are easily adaptable to other settings in higher education. Environmental Gratitude Journal is intended to foster students' appreciation for the environment and to remind them that all human life, including theirs, depends on the earth. Product Life Cycle is part of a course on Global Pluralism and its purpose is to enhance students' appreciation for people who make globally traded products.
