ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the technological environment, and not specifically on the natural environment or the challenge of climate change, it should be clear that these two environments are not fully separable domains of human or planetary existence. It also focuses on the work which author have been doing to help students reflect on their digital tools, work that also helps them use these powerful tools in ways that are more personally sustainable. But the ultimate challenge goes beyond the personal—to the concerns for communal, societal, and planetary sustainability. For a number of years, author worked in a well-known Silicon Valley think tank, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). People live in a culture dominated by an economic system that is devoted to ever faster and more efficient production and consumption. To date the author has not explicitly raised the topic of environmental sustainability in his course on Information and Contemplation.
