ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on the results of a collaborative teaching and research project between a large research university in the United States and a small university of science and technology in the Middle East. It refers to the universities with pseudonyms for the research university in the US (RUS) and for the science and technology university in the Middle East (STU). The chapter aims to develop a professional development (PD) program to improve overall teaching at STU and to support the faculty at STU in its move to become English as a medium of instruction (EMI) university. The economic, political, and social forces at work in many countries throughout the world have pushed educational enterprises toward increased international involvement. Institutions of higher education enact policies related to EMI to survive in an increasingly global academic environment. In many countries, the general and specific infrastructure does not support the effective implementation of EMI.
