ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the exemplary practices of one teacher educator, whose personal mission is to prepare teachers for teaching in multilingual/multicultural classrooms. The teacher education literature has emphasized the importance of developing skills for teaching English language learners (ELLs) in initial teacher education programs. The chapter presents the observation and interview data with Lisa have been juxtaposed with the views of the teacher candidates (TCs) during the interviews. Lisa was originally from England and an immigrant to Canada. She had attempted to learn several languages. English was her first language, and she had some level of competence in Bulgarian, Swedish, Spanish, and German. Lisa demonstrated exemplary teaching practices in preparing linguistically and culturally diverse TCs to teach ELLs in mainstream classrooms. In her first class, Lisa provided data regarding the population and demographic changes in Canada, especially in its urban centres. More importantly, Lisa instilled a desire in her students to advocate for marginalized populations.
