ABSTRACT

The introduction chapter presents an overview of some key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the unique social needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder across a range of educational environments. It introduces the reader to the world of Autism Spectrum Disorder, describing the unique and oftentimes idiosyncratic behaviours of students with this diagnosis with particular emphasis on social skill development. The book investigates the broad spread, often long-term, impacts of bullying and the social vulnerability of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It describes how identity is a complex and ongoing process that provides an insight into a person, determining how others view them and how they come to understand and view themselves. It also discusses social inclusion for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder across the preschool years. The book highlights the important role culture plays in the social inclusion of persons with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
