Educaring is based upon respect Magda Gerber states, "We not only respect babies, we demonstrate our respect every time we interact with them. Respecting a child means treating even the youngest infant as a unique human being, not as an object". With respect as the basic orientation of all the principles, and recognizing that each principle is supported by the others, the first is "Basic trust in the child to be an initiator, an explorer and a self-learner". Assuming that the child is motivated to connect, the adult invites the baby to be involved in all the caregiving events he or she experiences every day as an active participant, instead of as a passive recipient. The Educaring approach accommodates the infant's need for exploration by suggesting that babies be allowed to follow their desires in a prepared environment that is safe, interesting, and supportive.
