ABSTRACT

In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful. All praise be to Allah, Lord of all the worlds, Most beneficent, every-merciful. The Muslim community in America comprises a mosaic of diverse ethnic and cultural groups that have embraced a variety of worldviews depending on its reading of Islam's two foundational sources: the Qur'an and the Sunnah. One of the major challenges and concerns that are faced by the Muslim community in America is alienation and disillusionment of its youth population from its religious and cultural roots. Healthcare professionals who are respectful of the seriousness with which Muslims practice their faith will be a step ahead. Granting respect to the person who identifies with Islam, whether in past family or cultural connections or in present-day involvement, is essential in the effort to properly care for patients. This chapter presents a case study of a 13-year-old Sunni Muslim girl with leukemia who had undergone a bone marrow transplant.
