ABSTRACT

Guided by the revised applied model of imagery use (RAMDIU), this chapter reviews research to explain the who, where, when, what, why, and how of golfers' image. Recommendations are provided on how to improve the effectiveness of golfers' imagery, including the role golf professionals can have in encouraging players' imagery use, and strategies for overcoming common imagery problems. Better golfers will more likely be aware of their preferred imagery process and be able to adapt the content and characteristics of their imagery to the function required by the situation. However, novice golfers or those less familiar with using imagery may benefit from more structured support, including Layered Stimulus Response Training (LSRT) and imagery scripts, to help them develop these skills. Research has focused mostly on the short game; for a more robust evidence base, further research is also warranted on the long game as to test out the predictions of RAMDIU across a range of skill levels and situations.
