ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews and summarizes research completed on golf instruction and coaching that offers both the scholar and practitioner useful information for understanding the practices and procedures necessary for meeting the instructional needs of golfers. It addresses development and actions of those whose professional work is intended to improve the playing performance of golfers. The chapter reviews research pertaining to formal education and professional development of golf instructors and coaches. It presents a review of research on the skills and practices of golf instructors followed by communication and additional skills necessary for effective golf instruction. The chapter discloses studies of golf instructors and coaches themselves or the practice of golf instruction, regardless of the level of instructional expertise. During instruction, it appears that there is benefit from a teacher providing the student with both internally and externally focused cues when teaching swing skills.
