ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a comparison of institution-level interventions in women's leadership by reviewing some of the literature, presenting themes that emerged from interviews with key figures in particular industries in South Africa and providing case studies of how two organizations responded to the opportunity to advance their women into leadership positions in order to create a more gender-balanced workplace. In terms of institution-level interventions on women leadership, the debate regarding women-only development programs, as opposed to gender-diverse programs, is one that is heavily disputed by academics and practitioners alike. A respondent commenting on the women-only leadership development program said the program was successful in creating awareness among the participants of the networking opportunities in their field and the potential for the development of supportive collaborative relationships. The chapter is closed by offering practical ideas to readers about how they may wish to design and implement such institution-level interventions within their own context.
