How do space, place, the senses, identity and law inform each other? This chapter investigates the ‘spirit of place’ that was asserted, negotiated and denied in litigation about one particular place: Schubart Park, a high-rise apartment complex in the City of Tshwane, South Africa. The fi rst section considers Schubart Park as a place and an object of litigation. It traces the history of the block, the series of court cases that followed the events of 21 September 2011 and highlights the voices of two residents of Schubart Park.
