ABSTRACT

The death of Mr. George Oliver May on May 25, 1961, three days after his 86th birthday, marks the passing of one of the great leaders of the profession. The breadth of his interests and the impact of his personality made him perhaps the single most influential figure in the profession of public accountancy. In 1901 when the United States firm of Price Waterhouse & Co. was formed he joined that firm, and in 1902 became a partner. During the period subsequent to 1926 and until he retired he made many speeches, wrote many articles, served as an expert witness. In 1927 he was the leader in a joint endeavor between the American Institute and the New York Stock Exchange, which resulted in an exchange of correspondence between the Stock Exchange and the special committee of the Institute. He always took the greatest interest in the discussion of accountancy matters on an international basis.
