ABSTRACT

The death of Mr. George O. May on May 25, 1961, three days after his 86th birthday, marks the passing of one of the great leaders of the profession. During his lifetime he witnessed and greatly influenced the important part played by financial accounting in the amazing development of U.S. industry in the corporate form, the growth of a public accounting profession from its small beginnings to a total of 70,000 CPAs today and the growth of our firm to its present size from its formation in this country in 1901. The breadth of his interests and the impact of his personality made him perhaps the single most influential figure in the profession of public accountancy.
