ABSTRACT

John (Jack) Lansing Carey was a great administrator of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a leader in the area of professional ethics, an historian, and a keen observer of the accounting profession and its leaders for a period of sixty-two years. As his services to the Institute increased he was promoted to Executive Director in 1948, and eventually became Administrative Vice President of the Institute in 1967. He is credited for launching many new programs such as continuing education, establishing an office in Washington to keep in touch with happenings in the government, increasing ties with the academic community, increasing the importance of long-range planning, and many other projects. Carey also contributed to the growth and blossoming of the Journal of Accountancy. He served as its managing editor between 1937 and 1949, as an editor from 1949 to 1954, and as a publisher from 1955 until 1966.
