ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a starting point for reflection and many of the activities within it will encourage teachers to think about their practice. It discusses the pedagogy of teaching English with key elements of knowledge, decision-making and teachers. The book presents the pedagogical theme by looking at classroom management, and discussing practical strategies for improving it. It examines language and literacy development, discussing the role of play, literacy at home and environmental print, as well as looking at early reading and writing and the development of language skills. The book also examines the knowledge about language that teachers need to acquire if they are to deliver the curriculum successfully. It provides practical ideas for classroom activities to develop children's linguistic understanding. The book focuses on the teaching and learning of reading and examines different approaches while offering practical advice on teaching phonics within comprehensive programme.
