ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how to develop early writing. It examines the role of the teacher in modelling and discussing writing. The chapter discusses ways of developing children's ability to work independently. It explores the importance of both transcriptional and compositional in writing. The chapter considers the importance of handwriting and looks at the importance of talk for writing. It describes how to create a writing classroom and suggests practical activities for the classroom. The chapter looks at the development of writing from early stages to the more sophisticated writing that many children in Key Stages are capable of producing. It considers the changing nature of written communication and thinks about how this might affect the ways in which we teach children about writing. The chapter examines how the writing process can be developed to foster increasing concentration on accuracy as a piece of writing develops.
