ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ideal scenarios for teaching English. It aims to enable the reader to reflect on classroom management and consider the effects of different approaches. The chapter examines classroom management in specific English-teaching situations, including reading sessions, writing sessions and class discussions. It provides practical ideas for successful class management. Classroom management can be a preoccupation for both inexperienced and experienced teachers. Central to effective classroom management is the creation of an environment in which children and teachers feel comfortable and confident that they can work without distraction. Most elements of successful classroom management are common-sensical and seem obvious when one observes a skilled teacher at work. Skilful teachers are able to do in a positive way without upsetting children or creating a negative atmosphere. Skilful teachers recognise the signs of children becoming restless, and intervene quickly. Children may be expected to work in different ways at different stages of a literacy lesson.
