ABSTRACT

Leading for peace in the Middle East is particularly challenging when one side publicly calls for the destruction of the other in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq. For J. Galtung, a founder of peace and conflict studies (PACS) and peace research, united objectives that lift people out of their petty preoccupations and carry them conflicts that tear a society apart include the simultaneous presence of desirable states of mind and society, like harmony, justice and equity. “Negative” peace, stood for the mere “absence of war” and other kinds of open violent human conflict while hidden violence remains. Scholars and practitioners in PACS and leadership studies were invited to make a scholarly contribution to peace leadership. L. Reychler and A. Stellamans’ review of texts on peacebuilding leadership efforts subsumed the work of peace leaders in four critical areas: values, analytic style, change behavior, and personality/motivation. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
