ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the efforts that Indigenous leaders such as Michael Champagne, Kevin Chief, and Niigaanwewidam Sinclair have made to build peace between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, particularly with new Canadian immigrants and refugees. As part of the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was mandated with collecting the stories of survivors and helping to chart a path forward towards reconciliation for all Canadians. On June 2, 2015, the TRC released its 94 Calls to Action as part its Final Report to the people of Canada. Canada has many treaties, legal contracts with other sovereign nations, around the world. In 1871, when lands opened up for European settlers as a function of Treaty One, the education of new Canadians about Indigenous people, their culture, history, cultural practices, or treaty laws was never considered as part of the citizenship process or curriculum for school kids.
